Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Guwahati campus was founded on 7 September 2006 as the first non-governmental engineering institute in Assam under the patronage of the Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society. Ever since its inception, the institute’s aim has been to establish a morally sound educational system, which not only produces competent professionals but also excellent human beings contributing towards the welfare of the Society.

This Institute was established with approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and permission from the State Government. Initially, GIMT was affiliated to the oldest and most reputed University in the State i.e. Gauhati University. Since August 2013, the institute has been affiliated to ‘Assam Science & Technology University’


The first session of the Institute commenced on 13 July 2006 with 240 students in four disciplines leading to the Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering (ETE), Applied Electronics and Instrumentation (AEI), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology (IT). Two more undergraduate courses in Mechanical

Engineering (ME) and Electrical Engineering (EE) were added in the years 2007 and 2008 respectively.

The first post-graduate course in Business Administration leading to award of M.B.A degree was introduced in the year 2008. In 2009, the second postgraduate course in Computer Application leading to award of M.C.A degree commenced at the institute.

The Institute also has approval from AICTE for Master of Technology (M. Tech) courses in Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), Instrumentation & Control Engineering (ICE) and Thermal and Fluid Engineering (TFE). Gauhati University has recognized the Laboratories of the Department of Electronics & Tel-ecommunication Engineering for Ph.D. programme.

Although only 11 years old, GIMT has already evolved as a pioneer in the field of higher technical education. The quality is further amply recognized when five engineering programmes were accredited by NBA in 2016.

B.Tech programmes in CSE, EE and ME are accredited for the Academic years 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 and AEI and ECE are accredited for the Academic years 2016-17 and 2017-18 by National Board of Accreditation (NBA),Govt. of India


About Shrimanta Shankar Academy


Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society (SSA) was formed in the year 1992 with its registered office at Dr. J.C. Das Road, Panbazar, Guwahati (Assam). The aim of SSA is to promote and propagate the philosophical ideals of the great Saint of Assam, Shrimanta Shankar Dev, namely Truth, Discipline, Ethics and Excellence,. Under the Societies Registration Act, 1886, the Society was formed initially with seven members. The present strength of the members of the Society has gone up to 19. The following are the aims and objectives of the Academy:

(a) To maintain a spiritual environment based on the motto enunciated by Shrimanta Shankar Dev in the campus/colleges/schools run by the Society.

(b) To educate the students and train them for a career with character.

(c) To spread the knowledge of physical, intellectual, moral, social and mental development among the students of the Academy.

(d) To provide infrastructure for imparting education (all types) to the students by providing colleges, hostels, laboratories, libraries, research centers etc. and to run/ maintain/ develop them.

(e) To publish/circulate/distribute any literary materials, books, pamphlets, periodicals, journals, circulars, letters etc. in order to promote the objectives of the Society.

(f) To provide scholarship/stipend to the students who are engaged in research on the matters connected to the Society.

(g) To provide and give all kinds of aid to the less privileged/needy students of the Academy.

(h) To collect/preserve the writings of Shrimanta Shankar Dev and conduct research on the same.

(i) To raise and collect funds by subscriptions, donations, grant-in-aid or otherwise for furtherance and fulfillment of the objectives of the Society.

(j) To borrow or raise loans either on security of the assets of the Society or otherwise and on such terms and conditions as may be determined by the governing body from time to time.

(k) To sell, improve, manage, develop, exchange, lease or let under lease or sublet, mortgage, dispose of, turn to account otherwise deal with all or in ant part of the movable or immovable properties of the Society.

(l) To invest, deposit, withdraw or deal with the funds of the Society as the governing body may deem fit and proper.

(m) To donate funds to trusts, organizations or institutions having similar objectives.

(n) To co-ordinate its activities with any other educational or charitable institution, association or body corporate which has for its objects any one or all of the objects mentioned above.

(o) To continue with all activities, incidental or conducive to the attainment or furtherance of the objectives of the Society without any distinction as to caste, creed, religion, community, or language.
